INTERNSHIPS

Applications for internships are accepted on a rolling basis and must be received by the following deadlines:

April 1 for all summer internships
July 20 for all fall internships
December 1 for all spring internships

We currently have openings for an Artistic Intern, Arts Management Intern, and Editorial Intern. Each position carries a commitment of 3 to 6 months, with a minimum of 20 hours per week. Interns receive a monthly transportation stipend to cover their travel expenses, and school credit is available for eligible candidates. See below for specific requirements.

ARTISTIC INTERN

The Artistic Intern will work directly with the Artistic Director and Artistic Associate on current and upcoming artistic projects and with the Literary Associate on research projects. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Artistic Director in preparation for upcoming productions.
  • Organize interview and artistic databases.
  • Act as a liaison between the Artistic Director and other artists working with the company.
  • Help organize readings and workshops.
  • Provide general office support to the Artistic Staff.
  • Occasional research.
  • Ideal candidates will be detail oriented, independent workers, and confident in taking initiative.

    ARTS MANAGEMENT INTERN

    The Arts Management Intern will support the Managing Director and Development and Communications Manager on day-to-day management and administration. Responsibilities include:

  • Support all Development initiatives, both individual and institutional, encompassing donor relations, organizing and executing fundraising appeals, editing grant proposals, and special events.
  • Enhance communications initiatives through the creation of content for social media, the organization of mailing lists, and long-term communications planning.
  • Offer General Management and Company Management support, as needed.
  • Offer administrative support to staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite or other word processor and understanding of current social media platforms is required.

    Ideal candidates will work well independently, possess an attention to detail, and have a passion for the arts with a direct interest in learning about all facets of arts management and administration.

    EDITORIAL INTERN

    The Editorial Intern will work with the Editorial and Artistic Associates to support the Civilians' digital platform Extended Play.

    The Civilians' Extended Play is a website for creative and critical discourse emerging from investigative theater and performance. It features documentation, interviews, essays, video, and audio about artists - both American and international - who work at the dynamic intersection of art and life. With content that explores creative process, community, and new innovations in storytelling, Extended Play seeks to provide richer, more in-depth interaction that goes beyond the theater.

    Responsibilities include:

  • Support the creation and editing of content for the site, from start to finish.
  • Assist in responding to pitches and submissions.
  • Fact-check content.
  • Assist in publicity for web articles.
  • Build opportunities for online discussion and community engagement.
  • Ideal candidates will possess excellent writing and editing skills, excellent organizational skills, and be knowledgeable about and active on social media platforms.

    Experience in journalism or related field and/or theater, knowledge of investigative theater/performance and social practice, experience with Word Press, and video/audio editing skills are preferred, but not required.
